Master's Thesis: Water Body Extraction from satellite images using CNN
Problem
Traditional methods for water body extraction from high-resolution satellite data, such as NDWI and multiband approaches, rely solely on spectral features. This limitation often leads to inaccuracies, particularly when distinguishing water from clouds or mountain shadows, hindering effective resource management and disaster prevention.
Proposed Method
This project introduces a novel, automatic approach leveraging Fully Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). By learning discriminative spatial features, CNNs significantly improve water body identification. The methodology is rigorously tested with Cross Channel Normalization (CCN) and Batch Normalization (BN) using Sentinel 2 satellite imagery.
Objective & Impact
The research aims to demonstrate the CNN-based method's superior accuracy and efficiency compared to existing techniques. This advancement provides crucial information for water resource investigation, flood monitoring, agriculture, and wetland protection, enhancing planning and management capabilities.
This work highlights the power of deep learning to overcome challenges in remote sensing, offering a more robust solution for environmental monitoring and management.
